Project Overview

A timber-truss pavilion built of warm red brick is the heart of this traditional backyard near the Medical Center. Under the vaulted wood ceiling, a full outdoor kitchen pairs a wood-and-stone island with a built-in grill, a vent hood and a brick fireplace, with ceiling fans to keep it comfortable in summer.

Just steps away, a classic rectangular pool with a raised brick spa wall sits within a light, cool-to-the-touch deck. The pavilion is styled to match the brick-and-shingle home, so the whole yard reads as one design.

The Challenge

This was an addition to an existing older home. Its elevation was not ideal for draining all the new structure and decking we were adding.

What We Did

We paid close attention to surface drainage and sloped as much of the new decking as possible into the landscape areas. This let us handle the water runoff underground.

When a pool, outdoor kitchen and pavilion are added to an older home, drainage planning like this is just as important as the finishes.
